Did You Know?

Did you know that it’s not good to put alcohol on cuts, abrasions and open wounds? It causes the blood to coagulate and anaerobic bacterial infection. When the blood coagulates the white blood cells can’t get to the wound site as well. The anaerobic forms flourish because the white blood cells can’t get there fast enough and all the oxygen is removed from the wound site. Alcohol is good for surface disinfectant because it can kill gram negative bacteria by disrupting its cell wall. A better disinfectant for cuts and stuff is hydrogen peroxide because it is an oxidizing agent and can kill those anaerobic forms of bacteria by forming super oxide radicals that the bacteria can’t break down. The problem with peroxide, however, is that it does have mutagenic properties if used too much.

Can we tell that I had a microbiology test this morning?

I’m really enjoying this last semester so far. I’ve had two micro tests, two lab tests, two presentations, and a service learning project already. I purposely put all the presentations and projects early in the semester so that I can focus on wedding and traveling as the semester gets closer to graduation. I have 75 days til graduation and 152 days til the wedding. I’m very excited about both.

I’m still waiting on replies from the three remaining medical schools in Pennsylvania. An in the meantime I’ve taken up tutoring high school biology. I have three students who are all in the same sophomore biology class. They’re all bright and the material really isn’t all that difficult; I just think that the teacher is probably using too much scientific jargon and doesn’t translate well for non-science people. I started with one student and got the other two by recommendation. I enjoy teaching and if I don’t get into medschool this first year, I’m thinking about substitute teaching or teaching part time while I reapply.

In the world of wedding planning, things are going very well. I’ve purchased KB’s wedding band and mine should finished this week. We did these early because I won’t be in Charlotte after graduation and the jeweler we’re working with is only here in town. They have beautiful stuff and I highly recommend them if you want to have something designed. KB and I are going to Knoxville this weekend to talk with Dan, who will be officiating, and going over a survey we took back in October (we haven’t had any time to go back earlier than this to see the results). We’re also planning on going over to Connie’s Bridal, where I got my dress, to pick out tux styles. We looked at styles and colors this past Saturday, but Connie’s is better priced than where we were looking.

For spring break, we’re heading to Oklahoma to visit family and for me to have my bridal pictures taken. I’m looking forward to visiting with soon to be family. I met them all at Ces’ wedding but it was a rather hectic weekend and I didn’t have much time to actually talk to them.

So I guess life is going smoothly at the moment, for me anyway. KB has two things left to do: a post on the webboard and a paper. He’s working on the paper right now and I’m hoping that he’ll have it finished before we head off to Knoxville on Friday.

Today is my birthday.

KB took me out, I had curry chicken (yum) at the Bombay Grille, he got me a yummy cookie cake from the Great American Cookie Co., I got a nice nap, and then on the way into the building of my dorm I dropped most of the cake that I was going to share with my hall mates (I am very sad....no one should drop their birthday cake three flights of stairs away from sharing it while trying to get through an access card door). I'll live tho. I did manage to save two pieces (dropped 6-8 pizza slice size pieces). I'm going to go to bed and eat my cookie pieces tomorrow. All in all it was a nice birthday.

One down fifteen to Go

You know you’re sore when you can feel the individual muscles contracting when you walk up stairs.

You know you’re a science/mednerd when you can name the individual muscles.

Soreness = good aerobic workout in class yesterday.

I was going to write this tomorrow but today is close enough to being the end of the first week of classes that I don’t think it matters too much. I’ll only have one class tomorrow anyway.

The first week has been a pretty nice one. I still have to set up times for two of my classes (biology seminar and histology). It amazes me how much down time I have between classes this semester. I have a two hour break between classes on Monday and Wednesday and I have only one class Tues, Thurs, and Fri. :-o I’ve already put in several hours of work in this week and will be heading off to do some more this afternoon (after a short nap of course…which is the nice thing about having breaks).

I’ve gotten back in gear for wedding stuff while I’m waiting on my replies from the medschools in PA. I’m excited even though I still have about 120 invitations to address. I’m going to be making an appointment with the jeweler soon so I can discuss the design of KB’s wedding band and also to see what they have available as jackets for my own wedding band.

KB is still finishing up classes. His deadline is the 24^th of January, which is the day after my birthday. I would like to go out to eat, but if it comes down to going out and him finishing up a last assignment, I’ll settle for the best American Cookie Cake he can find and a nice leisurely nap after church. Pray for him and for me. Crunch times are not pleasant.

Speaking of naps….I think I’ll go take one now. Maybe I’ll read myself to sleep with my CORE book…

Well, well, well. Where did that time go? Today is reading day here at school, which means that classes are officially over for CAS. I do have one more Hayworth class on Monday evening, but all of my classes and finals will be finished by next Thursday.

It has been a rather busy (and unusually stressful) semester and I am glad that it’s winding down. I have an extremely light last semester for school. I’m taking the minimum hours (12) in order to be a full time student (I would have taken less but I didn’t want to mess with the hassles of living on campus as a parttimer and the havoc it would wreak on my scholarships and other financial stuff….it just wasn’t worth the mess). I’m not quite sure what I’m going to do with all of the extra time I’ll have next semester tho. My classes for next semester are:

Intro to Microbiology
CORE 410 (Ethics)*
Biology Seminar*
Independent Study in Histology*
Aerobics

Only three of those classes (*) are required, the other two were for the needed hours. Micro is going to be my most difficult class by far; it’s also my only MWF class. Aerobics is for stress relief.

I’m looking forward to having a break this Christmas. Since I have most of the wedding stuff settled, I won’t have to worry about that either. I can sit and read to my heart’s relief and body’s relaxation. (I’ll admit that I’ll probably be getting lots of naps in there too. I love naps; they are not a waste of time, KB.) I’m looking forward to being with my family for Christmas and it feels a bit odd that this will be my last Christmas as an Evans (not quite sure what to make of that really). KB’s coming for Christmas in the mountains with me to meet the half of my family he doesn’t know. I’m looking forward to it and apparently so is the rest of the family **bwahahaha**.

I guess I should start studying. My first test is on Monday, but it’s genetics and we covered a lot this semester. Tuesday is Ecology, and Thursday I have two exams: Women in Music in the morning and Biochemistry in the afternoon. Please pray that I don’t go brain dead before the end of Thursday with studying and test taking.
